Portobello
Edinburgh's Seaside Escape, Victorian Sands & Beach Promenade. Two miles of golden sand, a historic Victorian promenade, artisan ice cream parlors, and cozy beachside pubs overlooking the Firth of Forth.
Welcome to Portobello
Walk barefoot along soft sandy beaches, browse independent shops on the High Street, and warm up in the historic Victorian Turkish Baths. Originally known as 'Figgate Muir', the area gained its romantic name in the 1740s when a Scottish sailor built a cottage here named 'Portobello Hut' after the capture of Puerto Bello in Panama. In the 19th century, Portobello boomed as a fashionable Victorian seaside spa resort. Promenaders flocked here for sea-bathing, seaside ballrooms, and the grand Victorian public swimming baths—one of only three remaining operational Turkish Baths in Scotland.
