About Barnbougle Castle

Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide

Barnbougle Castle occupies a breathtaking, secluded position directly on the shore of the Firth of Forth. While records indicate a fortification existed here in the 13th century, the original tower house was demolished and replaced in the 17th century, serving as the seat of the Moubray family and later the Earls of Rosebery.

In 1817, the family constructed the grand Dalmeny House nearby, and Barnbougle was abandoned to the elements. Following a spectacular explosion during a military drill, it lay in ruins until 1881, when Archibald Primrose, the 5th Earl of Rosebery (who later became Prime Minister), completely rebuilt the castle. He designed it as a private sanctuary to house his vast library and practice his political speeches, standing at the water's edge.

Today, this Category A listed building remains an occupied private residence within the rolling parklands of the Dalmeny Estate. Visitors walking the scenic coastal trail between Cramond and South Queensferry can enjoy excellent views of its battlements rising over the sea.
