About Bass Rock Volcanic Island Seabird Sanctuary

Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide

The World's Preeminent Gannet Sanctuary

Rising sheer 107 meters from the Firth of Forth, the Bass Rock is an ancient phonolite volcanic plug whose sheer basalt cliffs appear brilliant white from afar due to more than 75,000 breeding pairs of northern gannets (Morus bassanus).

Historic Fortress and Stevenson Lighthouse

Beyond its avian spectacle, the rock preserves the ruins of a 14th-century Douglas castle and state prison for Covenanters, topped by David A. Stevenson's 1902 automated white lighthouse.
