About Craigcrook Castle

Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide

Dating back to the early 17th century, Craigcrook Castle was originally built by the Adamson family. While the exterior displays classic Scottish Baronial style, the massive vaulted stone ceilings inside indicate it may have been rebuilt on the foundations of an even older medieval stronghold.

The castle entered its golden age in the 19th century when it became the residence of Francis Jeffrey, Lord Jeffrey, the influential founder and editor of the Edinburgh Review. Under his tenure, Craigcrook became a famous literary salon, hosting intellectual giants including Charles Dickens, Sir Walter Scott, Hans Christian Andersen, and Alfred Lord Tennyson.

Architect William Henry Playfair was commissioned in 1835 to design major extensions to the property, adding the picturesque round tower and battlements. In the 20th century, the building served as commercial offices, and it remains a striking architectural gem in the Blackhall area.
