About Craiglockhart Castle
Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide
Standing as a rugged stone sentinel on a wooded hillside in southwest Edinburgh, Craiglockhart Castle is the ruins of a formidable 15th-century tower house. It was constructed by the Lockharts of Lee, a prominent local family, to defend their estate during the chaotic border disputes and clan skirmishes of the era.
Built using local red sandstone, the tower was originally a tall, four-story fortress with walls over five feet thick. Sadly, the upper floors collapsed long ago, but the vaulted ground-floor basement and parts of the first-floor hall still remain intact, surrounded by wild ivy and woodland.
Now designated as a scheduled ancient monument, the ruins are situated on the edge of Edinburgh Napier University's campus. They offer visitors a peaceful, atmospheric detour from the nearby Craiglockhart hills, providing a window into the city's medieval military defenses.
