About Dovecot Studios Tapestry & Craft Centre
Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide
Established in 1912, Dovecot is one of the world's few surviving hand-woven tapestry studios. Housed in the repurposed 1885 Victorian Infirmary Street Baths, visitors can lean over the high viewing balcony to watch master weavers create immense wool and silk tapestries by hand on traditional vertical looms below.
Curator Insider Tip: The tapestry viewing balcony is completely free to visit during weekday working hours—peer down to see the intricate cartoon drawings guiding weavers' hands.
