Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide
The Heroism of Black Agnes
Guarding the sea gate of eastern Scotland, Dunbar Castle is immortalized by the 1338 siege where Agnes Randolph, Countess of Dunbar (Black Agnes), successfully defied the Earl of Salisbury's English army for five months from the ramparts.
Royal Refuge of Mary Queen of Scots
Mary Queen of Scots found sanctuary here twice during her turbulent reign, following the murder of David Rizzio in 1566 and before the Battle of Carberry Hill in 1567, before the Scottish Parliament ordered the fortress dismantled.
