About Gilmerton Cove
Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide
A Hand-Carved Subterranean Mystery
Gilmerton Cove is a series of hand-carved sandstone chambers, secret passages, tables, and punch bowls buried beneath the streets of Gilmerton. Whether it was a secret drinking den for the Covenanters, a smugglers' hideout, a Masonic lodge, or a blacksmith's residence remains one of Edinburgh's greatest unsolved archaeological mysteries.
