Heritage background, architectural provenance & visitor guide

The Vision of Sir John Clerk of Penicuik

A key figure of the Scottish Enlightenment, Sir John Clerk designed this sprawling landscape in the 1700s, turning the North Esk valley into an intellectual and romantic masterpiece inspired by Roman villas.

The Preserved Palladian Ruin and High Pond

Following a catastrophic fire in 1899, the grand mansion was conserved as an evocative consolidated stone shell, surrounded by the High Pond, Roman bridge replicas, and Knightlaw Wood trails.
