The Story of Scottish Design Exchange

Prominently positioned on George Street in the heart of the New Town, the Scottish Design Exchange (SDX) is an inspiring, non-profit social enterprise that has revolutionized the creative retail landscape of Scotland. Founded in 2015 by Lynne Kennedy, SDX was established with a singular, transformative mission: to provide independent Scottish artists, makers, and designers with prime high street visibility while returning 100% of retail sales profits directly to the creators.

The expansive showroom is an energetic showcase of contemporary Scottish creativity, representing over 250 independent creators from Shetland to the Borders. Visitors wander through beautifully displayed sections featuring original oil and watercolour paintings, hand-thrown stoneware pottery, artisan silver jewellery, botanical skincare, hand-bound books, and quirky textiles.

Unlike conventional tourist shops selling mass-manufactured souvenirs, every item at SDX has been designed and produced in Scotland by named individual makers. Informational cards beside each display introduce the artist, their workshop location, and their craft process, allowing shoppers to forge a genuine connection with Scotland's vibrant grassroots artisan community.
